Over the years denim garments have gained more and more fame, it is also thanks to the several stars who have worn them and have made them a lifestyle. One of the first icons of denim was James Dean, loved by teen girls and imitated by boys thanks to his style as a sex symbol. In the 1960s, the way of wearing jeans changed, as did the models in vogue and the iconic stars of denim.
Denim Icons And Models Of The 60S
In this decade, many Hollywood stars started wearing them on and off the movie set. Stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, Doris Day are photographed with their favorite pair of jeans making it a fashion icon of the 60s.
Marilyn Monroe herself, who we all know for her beauty and the famous Happy Birthday Mr President, has given life to a timeless look: white shirt and high-waisted bootcut jeans with cowboy boots. This is how we admire the wonderful diva in the 1961 film “The Misfits“.
Towards the end of the decade, society changed and fashion with it. Youth protest movements begun and with them the hippy culturewas born, pacifist but nonconformist. As usual, where the mentality changes, so does fashion. Celebrities like Sonny and Cher, Mick Jagger and Jimi Hendrix wear flared jeans.
Flared pants were very popular, but they weren’t the only ones. In 1966 the iconic style of Brigitte Bardot arrived on the beach of Saint Tropez. Here we see her with a pair of jeans slim that leave the ankles uncovered, and a striped t-shirt, the marinière, proposed by Coco Chanel and then become a real cult.
We can say that the 60s represent a period in which different mentalities coincide with different models of denim pants. A sort of preparatory period for the 70s where the bell bottoms will prevail, not only among Hollywood stars but also among ordinary people.
